Back in 2007, before he founded InquireToHire, John Anderson was working as a team leader for an Internet start-up. Anderson was in charge of hiring programmers for his elite team, and he made a mistake. He didn’t do a criminal background check on a new hire. The hire—let’s call him Patrick-- was a friend of a friend. Anderson had seen Patrick’s work, and he trusted Patrick to work hard, play fair, and get the job done—the very ethics he himself had strived for as he worked his way up the corporate ladder.

But the new hire was a bad hire, and Anderson found out the hard way. It began with office supplies and petty cash, but when Anderson noticed that company funds were missing money, he took a closer look at his employees. He ran a criminal background check. And he found that Patrick had a criminal history—a history involving theft. Anderson never would have suspected it, because someone had vouched for Patrick, and the work he had done was good…but this employee had jeopardized the entire company nevertheless.

It wasn’t enough to fire Patrick.
